Braces are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also working to improve dental health.
The application of braces moves the teeth as a result of force and pressure on the teeth. Braces have constant pressure which, over time, move teeth into the desired positions. The process loosens the tooth after which new bone grows in to support the tooth in its new position. This is called bone remodeling. Braces are commonly worn for a year or more and adjustments are only made every few weeks. A tooth will usually move about a millimeter per month during orthodontic movement, but there is high individual variability.
Traditional braces consist of standard metal brackets that are adhered to your teeth with an adhesive and connected by wire. They require periodic tightening so pressure can gradually straighten your teeth and align your jaw as needed.
Ceramic braces are made of composite materials. They come in varying levels of transparency so you can have ceramic braces that mimic the color of your natural teeth.
SPEED Braces use an energy-storing component called a ‘Spring Clip’ to straighten teeth. The SPEED Spring Clip works like a computer chip inside your braces. The Spring Clip, made of a ‘Super-Elastic’ space age material, then follows the programmed instructions by applying a light continuous force to gently move teeth to their correct position.
As an alternative to more traditional orthodontic solutions, which entail metal braces and brackets, Invisalign offers an orthodontic adjustment method that uses a series of clear aligners, or trays, to gradually adjust your teeth and alignment.
Lingual braces are metal braces, so they’re not invisible, but they’re attached to the back of the teeth versus the front. So when you smile, no one can see them.
