Oral Biopsies

Oral biopsy is a procedure commonly performed by a dental surgeon involving extraction of sample cells or tissues for examination to determine the presence or extent of a disease. The tissue is generally examined under a microscope by a pathologist, and can also be analyzed chemically.

Biopsies are of 2 types :

A. Excisional Biopsies

  • (Where an entire lump or suspicious area is removed)

B. Incisional Biopsies

  • (Where only a sample of tissue is removed with preservation of the histological architecture of the tissue’s cells)

Biopsies are most commonly performed for insight into possible cancerous and inflammatory conditions.
